What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a skullcap herb extract (Scutellaria barbata). It's delivered in liquid form, using alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to suspend and preserve it.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for skullcap's effectiveness is not established in the data we hold. The product is listed with insufficient reliable evidence for epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
That means we don't have enough solid clinical data to rate how well it works for any of these.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is often used short-term, but the evidence on long-term safety is limited and product quality varies — so use it with care. The most common side effects reported are cognitive impairment, digestive disturbances, and sedation.
A small number of trial participants taking higher doses (350 mg three times daily) reported mild digestive upset, and one reported vivid dreams, though a link to the herb wasn't confirmed. A single 100 mg dose does not appear to cause brain-related side effects, but 200 mg or higher may bring on sedation and cognitive dulling.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided then as well.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Ban Zhi Lian, check with your doctor or pharmacist about any CNS depressants you take — including sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioid painkillers, sedating antihistamines, and other drugs that slow your central nervous system. Skullcap can add to their sedating effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ban Zhi Lian might appeal to someone looking for a traditional herbal remedy, but the effectiveness evidence isn't established for the conditions it's marketed for. The main caution is with sedating medications — skullcap can add to their effects.
If you take any CNS depressants (sleep aids, anti-anxiety meds, opioids, or others that make you drowsy), talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.

Ban Zhi Lian by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ban Zhi Lian by Hawaii Pharm contains skullcap, which has one documented interaction with medications: it may add to the sedating effects of CNS depressants (drugs that slow your brain and nervous system).

Animal and clinical research suggests skullcap itself can cause sedation and cognitive impairment, so combining it with sedating medications — including sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, pain relievers like opioids, and others that work on your central nervous system — could enhance drowsiness and impair your thinking.
