Here's the simple version: both alprazolam (Xanax) and skullcap can have a calming, sedating effect on your brain. Alprazolam works by quieting down nerve activity, and some animal studies suggest skullcap may do something similar by nudging GABA, the brain's natural 'calm down' signal. Put them together and those relaxing effects can stack up.

What that might feel like is extra drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, slower thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet. To be honest, this interaction is mostly theoretical and based on lab and animal work, so we don't have strong human proof. Still, since both calm the nervous system, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you drive.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
