Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Skullcap's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Relaxation and nervous system support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, Nervous tension, Sleep quality, Muscle tension.
  • The closest evidence on file: Skullcap is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Skullcap is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Insomnia, Stress.

The evidence we hold on skullcap doesn't support its use yet. We rate it as having insufficient reliable evidence for epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

That means the studies so far haven't established that it works for these uses — not that it definitely doesn't, just that we can't say it does based on the data available.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Skullcap is most commonly used short-term, but there's limited safety data and product quality varies, so use it with care. The most common side effects reported are sedation, cognitive impairment, and digestive disturbances.

A single 100 mg dose didn't show CNS effects in testing, but higher doses like 200 mg may cause drowsiness and mental fog. One person taking a much larger dose (350 mg three times daily) reported vivid dreams, though it's unclear if skullcap caused it.

About 9% of people in a trial at that higher dose had mild digestive upset. The safety data advises against using this product during pregnancy.

Safety is unknown during breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then too.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Skullcap.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 248 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with us before using this product if you take CNS depressants — that's sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, sedating antidepressants, or anything else prescribed to calm your nervous system. Skullcap can add to their drowsy or mentally dulling effects.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Skullcap has a long history in herbal use, but we don't yet have solid evidence it works for the conditions it's marketed for. The main concern is its sedating effect — don't combine it with sleep aids, anxiety medications, or opioids without checking with us first.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, skip it. Talk to your pharmacist before you start, especially if you take any medications that affect your brain or make you sleepy.
