HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Bee Pollen Complex by The Vitamin Shoppe
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bee Pollen Complex contains three active ingredients — bee pollen powder, bee propolis extract, and royal jelly extract. Bee pollen is the pollen collected by honeybees; propolis is a resinous mixture bees use to seal their hives; and royal jelly is a nutrient-rich secretion that feeds bee larvae.
The product also contains inactive ingredients (fillers and binders) including dicalcium phosphate, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and an aqueous coating.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product can do varies widely by ingredient and use. Bee propolis may be effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and cold sores, and possibly effective for blood sugar control.
Royal jelly is possibly effective for menopausal symptoms but appears ineffective for allergies, physical performance, and blood sugar. Bee pollen itself has insufficient evidence for most claims — we don't have reliable data to say whether it works for hay fever, amenorrhea, hot flashes, or enlarged prostate.
One rating suggests bee pollen is ineffective for athletic performance.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These three bee-derived ingredients are generally well tolerated by most people, but allergic reactions are a real concern — especially if you have a history of seasonal pollen allergies, asthma, or sensitivity to bee products. Serious reactions are rare but documented and can include anaphylaxis, breathing trouble, swelling of the face, and in severe cases, death.
Bee pollen has caused rare cases of liver inflammation and kidney problems. Royal jelly poses a particularly high risk of allergic symptoms in people with asthma or atopy (a tendency toward allergies), including itching, hives, swelling, and breathing difficulty.
For pregnancy, bee pollen and propolis are best avoided due to insufficient safety data; royal jelly also lacks enough information. For breastfeeding, propolis is possibly safe, but bee pollen and royal jelly should be avoided.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications before taking this product if you're on warfarin or any blood thinner (including other anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs) — there's a documented risk of increased bleeding. Double-check any blood pressure medication, since royal jelly may lower blood pressure.
Also run through any drugs your liver processes, particularly those metabolized by the CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, or CYP2E1 pathways, since propolis may theoretically raise their blood levels. Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth considering if you're looking for possible support with cold sores, mouth sores, or menopausal symptoms and you don't have allergies to bee products. However, anyone on warfarin or other blood thinners, blood pressure medications, or multiple drugs processed by the liver should talk with their pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
If you have a history of asthma, seasonal allergies, or bee-product sensitivity, it's especially important to discuss this with your pharmacist first.

Bee Pollen Complex by The Vitamin Shoppe Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bee Pollen Complex by The Vitamin Shoppe contains three bee-derived ingredients — bee pollen powder, bee propolis extract, and royal jelly extract — and it does interact with medications.
The most serious documented concern involves warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Bee pollen and royal jelly can both increase bleeding risk with warfarin; in fact, there are case reports of patients whose INR (a measure of how thin their blood is) spiked dangerously after starting bee pollen or royal jelly while on warfarin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bee propolis extract presents additional interactions worth knowing about. It may theoretically increase blood levels of drugs processed through several liver pathways — including CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, and CYP2E1 substrates — and could also raise bleeding risk with other blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs.
Royal jelly may lower blood pressure, which could be a concern if you're already on blood pressure medication.
Additionally, propolis might theoretically decrease warfarin's effectiveness, based on animal data — though this hasn't been seen in humans yet. Altogether, these interactions span 1,025 individual medications.
Before you start this product, run your exact prescriptions through the medication checker on this page.

For each ingredient in Bee Pollen Complex with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bee Propolis extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP1A2. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP1A2 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP1A2 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C9. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C9 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C9 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, propolis might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
In vitro research shows that propolis can inhibit CYP2E1. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, propolis might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Animal research shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases the international normalized ratio (INR). This effect has not been reported in humans.
Royal Jelly extract
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, royal jelly might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that royal jelly might lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Royal jelly might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
In one case, an 87-year-old male who was previously stabilized on warfarin developed hematuria and was found to have an INR of 7.29 after taking a royal jelly supplement for one week.
Bee Pollen powder
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is some concern that bee pollen might interact with warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding.
In one case report, a patient on warfarin had a stable international normalized ratio (INR) of 1.9-3.3 for 9 months. The patient's INR was found to be 7.1 after starting bee pollen granules one teaspoon twice daily for approximately one month. The patient's warfarin dose was decreased by approximately 11% in order to return the INR to the therapeutic range while continuing the bee pollen supplement.
