HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Bergamot Mint by Hawaii Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic bergamot mint extract, supplied as a liquid. Bergamot is a citrus fruit whose peel and oil have been studied for effects on cholesterol and blood sugar.
The extract is preserved in vegetable palm glycerin, pharmaceutical grade alcohol, and purified water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Bergamot extract is possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) — the strongest evidence we have for it. For mental alertness, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.
The evidence for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and autism spectrum disorder is too sparse to rate. If you're considering this for cholesterol, talk with your doctor about how it might fit into your overall plan.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The oral extract appears generally well tolerated when used short-term, though one person in clinical trials reported heartburn. The essential oil form, by contrast, can be toxic if swallowed and can cause sun-related skin damage — blisters, redness, and pigment spots, especially in fair-skinned people.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so avoiding it is advised. Breastfeeding safety is unknown, so it's safer to avoid it then too.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check your medications with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on photosensitizing drugs (which heighten sun sensitivity) or antidiabetes drugs (which lower blood sugar). Bergamot extract may strengthen the effects of both, raising the risk of sun reactions or low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Bergamot Mint is possibly effective for high cholesterol but comes with real caution flags around sun sensitivity and blood sugar. If you take photosensitizing drugs or diabetes medications, or if you're pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
It's generally well tolerated orally, but the essential oil form isn't meant to be swallowed.
