Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: biotin (also called vitamin B7), supplied at 5,000 micrograms per softgel. The inactive ingredients are soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, yellow beeswax, and titanium dioxide — typical capsule materials and oils.

Does it work?

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Hair, skin, and nail health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Brittle nails, Biotin deficiency, Seborrheic dermatitis, Hair loss, Nail health, Skin quality.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Likely Effective" for Biotin deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for biotin deficiency — the clearest use for a supplement form. For other purposes, the evidence is less solid.

It's rated possibly ineffective for multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis, and there's insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it helps alopecia areata (hair loss in patchy areas).

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because excess is flushed out in your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been associated with mild diarrhea — in trial data, mild diarrhea was reported by a small number of people taking very large doses (300 mg daily, which is far above this 5,000 mcg product).

One isolated case report linked high-dose biotin with a rare chest inflammation, but no other similar reports have emerged since. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, biotin from food and prenatal vitamins is rated likely safe.

However, before taking a high-dose supplement like this one during pregnancy or while nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

Biotin 5,000 mcg by Spring Valley: Common Questions

Does Biotin 5,000 mcg by Spring Valley interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Biotin 5,000 mcg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Biotin 5,000 mcg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will biotin help my hair grow or stop my hair loss?
There isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether biotin helps alopecia areata (patchy hair loss). If you're interested in trying it, talk it over with your doctor or dermatologist first — they can help you decide whether it's worth a try for your specific situation.
Is this dose safe to take every day?
Yes. Biotin is generally well tolerated even at fairly high doses because your body simply clears what it doesn't need through urine. This 5,000 mcg dose is well above the typical daily need, but safety data supports regular use. If you're pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before starting a high-dose supplement.
Can I take this with food, or does it need an empty stomach?
The product facts don't specify timing or food requirements, so check the label on your bottle or ask your pharmacist for guidance on how to take it for best absorption.
What is biotin, and why would I need a supplement?
Biotin is a B vitamin (B7) that your body needs for healthy hair, skin, and nails, and to help convert food into energy. Most people get enough from food, but a supplement may help if you have a biotin deficiency — your doctor can test for that.
Will this interfere with my blood pressure or diabetes medication?
No interactions are documented between biotin and any medications in our data. That said, if you want to be completely sure about your specific drugs, use the medication checker on this page or ask your pharmacist.
What are the side effects?
Biotin at this dose is rarely associated with side effects. High-dose biotin (much larger than this) has rarely caused mild diarrhea. One very rare case report linked extremely high-dose biotin with chest inflammation, but no similar cases have been reported since — so it's not a known pattern.
