This formula has two active ingredients. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in how your body uses glucose and insulin.
ABALife is a fig leaf extract—the product uses fig leaf rather than fig fruit, which is a less-studied form. The capsules also contain microcrystalline cellulose (a filler), Nu-Flow (a flow agent to keep powder from clumping), and vegetable-based capsule material.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is rated Likely Effective for chromium deficiency and Possibly Effective for diabetes, meaning there's some research backing its use for blood sugar control. For prediabetes, the evidence rates as Possibly Ineffective.
Chromium does not appear effective for schizophrenia or high blood pressure. Fig leaf's effectiveness is less clear—the evidence we hold rates it as Insufficient Reliable Evidence to rate for constipation, diabetes, eczema, melasma, and vitiligo.
So while there's a small clinical study showing fig leaf may lower blood sugar in type 1 diabetes, the overall body of evidence is too limited to say how well it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses, though high or long-term doses may carry risks. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects include kidney and liver damage and blood cell problems; one case of anemia and blood cell counts dropping was reported in a patient taking very high doses (1,200–2,400 mcg daily) for several months. Chromium can also trigger skin rashes, hives, or contact dermatitis in people sensitive to chromium.
Fig fruit as food is safe for most people, but this product uses a concentrated leaf extract, which has less safety data. Fig leaf can cause photodermatitis (a severe sun-triggered skin reaction), and rare cases of allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported with fig.
Pregnancy and lactation data for this ingredient show it is Likely Safe. No pregnancy or lactation data are on file for chromium; the safety notes advise against extra chromium supplement doses during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor recommends it.

NSAIDs and aspirin may increase chromium retention, so mention those too.

ABALife
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, fig leaf might enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of hypoglycemic drugs.
A small clinical study in patients with type 1 diabetes shows that consuming a tea made from fig leaves modestly reduces postprandial glucose levels and insulin requirements.
Insulin
Fig leaf may enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of insulin.
A small clinical study in patients with type 1 diabetes shows that consuming a tea made from fig leaves modestly reduces postprandial glucose levels and insulin requirements.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, fig might increase the risk of photosensitivity when used in combination with photosensitizing drugs.
Many cases of photodermatitis from fig leaf have been reported. Some drugs that also cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
