Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 2 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains two active ingredients: New Zealand grassfed liver extract and New Zealand grassfed bone marrow. The liver contributes vitamins, minerals, and other compounds traditionally valued in ancestral diets.

Bone marrow is included for similar nutritional support. The capsule itself is made with gelatin as an inactive ingredient.

By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Liver Extract product and its label doesn't state a use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We don't have effectiveness data on file for this product. For chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), the liver extract is rated possibly ineffective — meaning the evidence doesn't back up its use for that condition.

For hepatitis C, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works or doesn't. If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what evidence exists.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

No adverse reactions have been reported, but a thorough safety evaluation hasn't been done. There are two cautions to know about.

Liver products can deliver very high levels of vitamin A, which could harm a developing baby — avoid it in pregnancy unless your doctor says otherwise. There's also concern about potential contamination: liver extract comes from raw animal liver sourced from slaughterhouses, possibly from sick animals, and cow liver from countries where mad cow disease (BSE) has occurred could theoretically carry that risk, though no human cases from contaminated liver extract have been reported.

Until more is known, choose products from countries where BSE hasn't been documented.

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Bone Marrow & Liver by Heart & Soil: Common Questions

Does Bone Marrow & Liver by Heart & Soil interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bone Marrow & Liver has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bone Marrow & Liver contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does liver extract really affect how warfarin works?
Liver extract can contain small amounts of vitamin K, which warfarin works against. In theory, big changes in how much you take could shift your blood-thinning level, but this hasn't actually been studied or reported in people. That's why it's Minor, not Major — but definitely worth checking with your pharmacist if you're on warfarin.
Can I take this if I already take iron supplements?
Both liver extract and your iron supplement contain iron, so taking them together could push your total iron intake higher than intended. The risk is higher if you take big doses, use it for a long time, or have a condition like hemochromatosis that makes iron buildup a concern. Talk to your pharmacist about spacing or dose.
Is this safe during pregnancy?
Liver products contain very high vitamin A, which can harm a developing baby. The safety data advises against it unless your doctor specifically recommends it. Definitely ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're pregnant.
Where does the liver come from, and is it tested?
The product uses New Zealand grassfed liver. The data we hold notes there's a concern about contamination from raw animal liver sourced from slaughterhouses, and about mad cow disease (BSE) in cow products from certain countries. No human cases from contaminated liver extract have been reported, but the label or manufacturer should clarify their sourcing and testing.
Does this actually work for fatigue or hepatitis?
The evidence on liver extract for chronic fatigue is rated possibly ineffective — meaning it doesn't back up that use. For hepatitis C, there isn't enough reliable evidence either way to say whether it works. This is a food-based supplement, not a treatment for disease.
