Brahmi Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Brahmi against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic gotu kola, a plant used traditionally and in modern herbalism to support circulation and skin health. The liquid is made with organic grain alcohol and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola's uses is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor blood flow in leg veins) and possibly effective for burns.
For cognitive function and Alzheimer disease, the evidence isn't yet strong enough to rate it reliably. We don't have enough data to say whether it works for anxiety or radiation-related skin damage.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in short-term use, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects are stomach irritation and nausea when taken by mouth.
Liver damage is rare but has been reported in a handful of cases — though whether gotu kola was actually responsible isn't certain. During pregnancy, the safety data advises against it; there isn't enough information to know if it's safe while breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then too.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your exact medications against these categories: CNS depressants (sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping pills) and hepatotoxic drugs (liver-stressing medications). If you take anything in either group, confirm with your pharmacist that it's safe to combine.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Brahmi may be worth considering if you're interested in venous insufficiency or burn healing. If you take sedating medications or drugs that affect your liver, check with your pharmacist first — the interactions are documented but manageable with care.

Brahmi by Banyan Botanicals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Brahmi by Banyan Botanicals contains gotu kola, which has documented interactions with two major drug categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, and similar drugs that slow brain activity) — gotu kola may add to their sedative effects, potentially making you drowsier or more impaired than expected. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gotu kola also carries a Moderate interaction with hepatotoxic drugs (medications known to stress or damage the liver). Taking them together might compound that liver stress.
There are a handful of case reports linking gotu kola to liver problems, though it's unclear whether gotu kola was truly the culprit in all of them, and a controlled trial of 120 mg daily for six months showed no liver changes.
Additionally, no interactions are documented for the other ingredients we could check. Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
Please use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions and supplements before you start.

Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking gotu kola might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
In vitro research suggests that gotu kola may have sedative effects via binding of GABA receptors.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking gotu kola with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects.
There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.
