How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Vitamin C from food and normal supplement doses is generally well tolerated. High doses — above 2 grams daily — can cause abdominal cramps, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and kidney stones, especially in people prone to them.
Rare serious effects at very high doses include kidney damage and elevated kidney acid levels. For pregnancy and lactation, normal dietary amounts and those in prenatal vitamins are considered safe; however, the data we hold rates high-dose supplements as possibly unsafe during pregnancy and lactation.
