Vitamin C from food and normal supplement doses is generally well tolerated. High doses — above 2 grams daily — can cause abdominal cramps, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and kidney stones, especially in people prone to them.

Rare serious effects at very high doses include kidney damage and elevated kidney acid levels.
