Camphor is generally well tolerated in small amounts applied to the skin, but it is unsafe if swallowed or overused and can cause serious toxicity—including heart rhythm problems and breathing trouble—if ingested in large doses. Avoid applying it to your chest or breast area.

Taken by mouth, camphor causes gastrointestinal upset and vision problems within minutes and can trigger neurological symptoms at high doses. Indian Tinospora is generally well tolerated orally, though headache has been reported in clinical trials.

However, rare cases of liver injury—including autoimmune hepatitis, acute hepatitis, and liver failure—have occurred after weeks of use; two patients required transplants and four died. Madagascar Periwinkle is considered unsafe as a supplement: the raw plant contains toxic alkaloids that cause hallucinations, seizures, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, hearing loss, and blood cell damage.

Both Tinospora and Madagascar Periwinkle are rated unsafe or likely unsafe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that Tinospora cordifolia can reduce fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Additionally, animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia has hypoglycemic effects.

Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
