Tinospora Cordifolia and Acetaminophen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Tinospora Cordifolia interacts with.

Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP1A2 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia). In lab dishes, this herb can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 when the concentration is very high. That enzyme is one of several pathways your body uses to process acetaminophen. In theory, slowing it could let a bit more acetaminophen hang around. But this has never actually been shown to happen in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

My bigger, more practical concern is your liver. Both heavy acetaminophen use and Giloy have each been linked to liver injury on their own, so stacking them isn't ideal. Please keep acetaminophen at recommended doses and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, especially if you drink alcohol or have liver issues.
