Catnip Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Catnip against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: catnip extract. The extract is preserved in certified organic cane alcohol and glycerin, which are inactive ingredients used as carriers and preservatives.
Does it work?
Not established
Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate catnip for the conditions listed — amenorrhea (missing periods), anxiety, tension headache, upper respiratory tract infection, indigestion, or gas. That means the evidence we have isn't strong enough yet to say whether it works for these uses.
If you're considering it for one of these, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research shows.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Catnip is generally well tolerated when used in reasonable amounts, though human safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are headache, malaise (a general feeling of unwellness), and vomiting.
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, vomiting, or malaise; in one case, a toddler who ingested a large amount of catnip tea developed drowsiness and a sleep-like state. Catnip is not recommended during pregnancy, as it may stimulate the uterus and safety hasn't been established.
There isn't enough safety data on its use while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check whether you take lithium — catnip may increase its levels. Also flag any CNS depressants: benzodiazepines, sleep aids, opioids, or sedating antidepressants, since catnip could add to their drowsy effects.
Run your medications through the tool below.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Catnip extract may work well for you if you're not taking lithium or sedating medications. If you do take either type, your pharmacist or doctor needs to review it first — lithium levels especially need watching.
It's generally well tolerated in typical amounts, but human safety data are still limited.

Catnip by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Catnip extract does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication used for bipolar disorder. Catnip appears to have diuretic properties — it may increase fluid loss — which could reduce how your body clears lithium.
This could cause lithium to build up to unsafe levels in your blood. If you take lithium, your dose might need adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Catnip also has sedative properties, so it can add to the drowsy or calming effect of CNS depressants — drugs like benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety pills), sleep aids, opioids, and some antidepressants. Taking them together may increase sleepiness, dizziness, or impaired thinking.
Additionally, Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications. We encourage you to search your specific medications below before you start.
