Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Chen Pi contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted Chen Pi, which is dried tangerine peel in liquid extract form. The extract is prepared in a menstruum (a liquid carrier used to concentrate the plant material).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Tangerine product and its label doesn't state a use — see Tangerine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold does not establish whether Chen Pi is effective for cancer or any other condition — the data rates it as insufficient reliable evidence to assess its benefits.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tangerine fruit itself is generally well tolerated when eaten as food. However, because this product is a concentrated extract rather than whole fruit, the safety picture is less clear — concentrated supplements and essential oils derived from tangerine should be used with caution and under medical advice.

In humans, very few side effects have been reported with medicinal tangerine use, though a complete safety review has not been done. Topically, tangerine essential oil has been linked to contact dermatitis in case reports.

Pregnancy and lactation safety data are not on file for this ingredient — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Tangerine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 644 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you use that are broken down by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — including sedatives like midazolam, blood pressure drugs, statins, and immunosuppressants. The human evidence on midazolam suggests the effect is likely small, but because this is a concentrated extract rather than juice, the impact could differ.

No interactions are documented for the other ingredients we could check.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). This suggests that tangeretin may stimulate CYP3A4 activity. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase CYP3A4 activity and decrease levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme. However, this effect is unlikely.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.

Midazolam (Versed)

In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, appears to increase the metabolism of midazolam in human liver microsomes by up to 52%. However, in humans, drinking tangerine juice 200 mL slightly delayed the absorption, but did not affect the metabolism, of midazolam. Theoretically, tangerine juice might increase the metabolism and reduce the effects of midazolam. However, this effect is unlikely.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chen Pi contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is tangerine peel safe to take long-term?
Tangerine fruit is safe as food, but this product is a concentrated extract — the safety of long-term concentrated supplements isn't well studied. Use it with caution and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about how long it's appropriate for you.
Does Chen Pi work for cancer?
The evidence we hold doesn't establish whether Chen Pi is effective for cancer — we rate it insufficient reliable evidence. If you're considering it as a cancer treatment or support, discuss that with your oncologist.
