Chinese Motherwort Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chinese Motherwort against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: leonurus japonicus, commonly known as motherwort. It's supplied as a capsule with gelatin as the inactive ingredient (capsule material).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on motherwort is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for bleeding.
For anxiety, amenorrhea (absent periods), asthma, and alcohol use disorder, the evidence is insufficient — we simply don't have enough reliable data to say whether it works. Talk to your pharmacist about what you're hoping to use it for, since the science may or may not back it up.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Motherwort appears to be generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though human safety data are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are diarrhea and stomach irritation.
Topically (on skin), it can cause contact dermatitis or photosensitivity (sun sensitivity). Doses above 3 grams may trigger uterine bleeding.
The safety data advise against motherwort in pregnancy because it has traditionally been thought to stimulate the uterus. There isn't enough safety information available for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then as well.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check whether you're using CNS depressants — sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or opioid pain relievers — because motherwort may amplify drowsiness. Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Motherwort may interest you if you're exploring traditional herbal support, but the evidence for most uses is thin. The main caution is pairing it with sedatives or other CNS depressants — check with your pharmacist first.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding aren't appropriate times to use this product. If you're considering it, run your medications through the checker and talk to your pharmacist about your specific situation.
