Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a freshwater algae at 1000 mg per serving. The inactive ingredients are dicalcium phosphate, stearic acid, cellulose, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose, silica, and cellulose coating — these are typical binders and flow agents that help hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, the evidence we have isn't solid enough to say whether it works.
If you're thinking of using it for one of those other reasons, we'd want you to talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality varies a lot between manufacturers — that's worth keeping in mind. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, and changes in stool color, especially in the first couple of weeks.
Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported. We don't have enough long-term safety data, so avoid it unless your doctor says it's okay.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with us if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinners — chlorella can reduce how well they work. Also flag any medications that make your skin sensitive to sunlight, since chlorella can add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might be worth considering if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor approves. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, you need to check with us first — the interactions are real.

Chlorella 1000 mg by PipingRock.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella 1000 mg by PipingRock.com does interact with some medications, and there are two main ones to watch for.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The biggest concern is with blood thinners, particularly warfarin (Coumadin). Chlorella is rich in vitamin K, which can counteract how warfarin works in your body.
There's at least one documented case where someone's warfarin stopped being effective after they started taking chlorella. If you're on warfarin, we need to check this with you before you start.
The second issue is photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization; there are case reports of people developing skin reactions on sun-exposed areas after taking it.
Combined with a photosensitizing drug, the effect could add up. Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start chlorella.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
