What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorella against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted Chlorella vulgaris — a type of freshwater green algae — delivered as a dried whole-plant liquid extract. The only other ingredient listed is menstruum, which is the liquid used to extract and preserve the chlorella.
Chlorella is nutrient-dense, containing protein, vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella's benefits is mixed in our data. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency — that's the strongest rating we hold for it.
For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it. That doesn't mean it doesn't work for those uses; it means the research we have access to isn't solid enough yet to make a claim.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely from brand to brand — that's something to keep an eye on. The most common side effects are mild: allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
These tend to show up especially in the first two weeks. Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported.
Because long-term safety data is limited, the safety facts advise against use unless your doctor approves it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check your medications against this product — especially warfarin (a blood thinner) and photosensitizing drugs like certain antibiotics, NSAIDs, or some diabetes medications. Both carry Moderate interaction risk.
Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're interested in a nutrient-dense algae supplement and your doctor approves — especially if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency. But if you take warfarin or photosensitizing medications, or if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of allergies to algae, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Product quality varies, so choose a trusted brand.

Chlorella by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Chlorella is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with medications — the two most significant concerns are photosensitizing drugs and warfarin (a blood thinner).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you're taking warfarin, this one needs attention. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can work against warfarin's job of thinning your blood.
There's at least one case where someone's warfarin stopped working properly after they started chlorella. We'd flag this as Moderate severity.
Chlorella may also cause photosensitization — that is, make your skin extra sensitive to sunlight — especially on sun-exposed areas. If you're already on a photosensitizing drug (such as certain antibiotics, NSAIDs, or some diabetes medications), chlorella could add to that effect.
That's also Moderate severity.
Although chlorella's been reported to cause photosensitivity on its own in a few case reports, we want to be clear: altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact drugs before you start.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
