Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Vitals 100% Premium Chlorella is a single-ingredient supplement: chlorella, a freshwater algae, in capsule form. The capsules also contain cellulose as an inactive ingredient (a standard binder).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Chlorella's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: immune system support and fatigue relief.
  • We looked for evidence on: Fatigue, Exercise-induced respiratory infections, General wellness, Energy support, Detoxification.
  • The closest evidence on file: Chlorella is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced respiratory infections (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Chlorella is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Fatigue.

The evidence for chlorella is mixed and often limited. It's possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, based on available data.

For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, there simply isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works. If you're considering this for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for you.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, but the quality and purity of products varies widely—that's something to keep in mind. The most common side effects are mild: allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, and darkened stools, especially in the first two weeks.

Serious allergic reactions like anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported. There isn't enough safety data to recommend chlorella in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically directs you to take it.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorella.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 337 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before starting, check with your pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner—chlorella can reduce its effectiveness due to high vitamin K content. Also double-check if you're on any drug that increases sun sensitivity, as chlorella may add to that effect.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chlorella might be worth considering if you're pregnant and have iron deficiency, and under your doctor's supervision. But if you take warfarin or a photosensitizing medication, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first—the interactions are real.
