Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: choline bitartrate. Choline is a compound your body uses to support nerve function, cell membranes, and brain chemistry.

The capsule itself is vegetarian, and the formula includes tri-magnesium citrate as an inactive ingredient.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Choline product and its label doesn't state a use — see Choline's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for choline's effectiveness is mixed and often incomplete. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's likely ineffective.

For Alzheimer's disease, age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, liver fat from intravenous nutrition (TPN-associated hepatic steatosis), and bronchitis, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. If you're taking this for a specific health goal, talk with your doctor about whether the current evidence supports it for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Choline is generally well tolerated at typical food and supplement doses. At very high doses — above the upper daily limit of 3.5 grams — it can cause fishy-smelling body odor, and at doses of 9 grams or more daily, you may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sweating, or salivation.

Choline is considered likely safe during pregnancy and lactation, but your doctor should guide your dose, since your need for it is higher while breastfeeding and it's important during pregnancy.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Choline.

Check whether you take atropine or other anticholinergic medications before starting this supplement. Choline may theoretically reduce how well atropine works in the brain.

Your pharmacist can tell you if any of your prescriptions fall into that category.

Atropine

Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.

Choline (Bitartrate) by Pure Encapsulations: Common Questions

Does Choline (Bitartrate) by Pure Encapsulations interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Choline (Bitartrate) has a known interaction with 16 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Choline (Bitartrate) contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is choline bitartrate, and what does it do in my body?
Choline is a nutrient that supports your nerves, brain chemistry, and cell membranes. Choline bitartrate is a form of choline combined with bitartaric acid for stability and absorption. Your body needs it for nerve signaling and memory.
Will choline help with my memory or mental decline as I age?
The evidence isn't clear enough yet to say whether choline helps with age-related cognitive decline or Alzheimer's disease. If memory support is your goal, ask your doctor whether choline is the right choice for you or whether other approaches might work better.
What are the side effects if I take too much?
At normal doses, choline is well tolerated. But doses above 3.5 grams daily can cause fishy body odor from how your gut breaks it down. At very high doses — 9 grams or more — people have reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, and salivation.
Is it safe to take choline while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Choline is considered likely safe during pregnancy and lactation, and it's actually important during both. Your needs are higher while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor about the right dose for you rather than choosing one on your own.
Does this product have any fillers or just choline?
The capsule itself is vegetarian, and there's a small amount of tri-magnesium citrate as an inactive ingredient. Otherwise it's choline — no unnecessary fillers.
