Clove oil is especially risky for children — doses as small as 5–10 mL have been toxic. Topically, clove is generally well tolerated, though it can cause burning, contact dermatitis, itching, mouth irritation, tingling, and in rare cases ulcers.

When inhaled (like in clove cigarettes) or used intravenously, clove may be unsafe. Orally, clove is well tolerated as food, but rare serious effects like liver failure have been reported.

Accidental ingestion of clove oil in children has caused CNS depression, confusion, and in severe cases seizure and coma. Stick to food amounts unless your doctor has cleared medicinal or supplement doses.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
