These proteolytic enzymes are generally well tolerated in adults, though some people report digestive upset or allergic reactions. Because proteases are used in laundry products, rarely some people develop allergies to them — usually from airborne or skin exposure at work.
Occupational exposure to airborne pepsin (another protease) has occasionally caused allergic rhinitis or asthma in case reports. During pregnancy, safety has not been established, so it's best avoided unless your doctor prescribes it.
