Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for deanol is limited. It's rated likely ineffective for Alzheimer disease and tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movement disorder).
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Deanol is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common ones reported are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
Less commonly, it's been reported to cause constipation, headache, insomnia, confusion, depression, and mood changes — especially at higher doses or in people with psychiatric conditions. At doses over 1000 mg daily, mood changes including depression and elevated mood have been reported; at 1500 mg daily, it's been reported to worsen schizophrenia symptoms in people with that condition.
There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy, and animal research raises some concern — so avoid it while pregnant. Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it then too.
