Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Elecampane product and its label doesn't state a use — see Elecampane's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for elecampane's use in acne and cough is not established in our data—we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate either claim. If you're considering this for those purposes, talk with your doctor about whether the available data supports its use for your specific needs.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Elecampane is generally used in small amounts in tea and tinctures, but it can trigger allergic reactions and stomach upset. At high doses taken by mouth, it may cause diarrhea, vomiting, muscle spasms, and in rare cases, paralysis-like symptoms.

Topically, it can cause allergic contact dermatitis, especially if you're sensitive to ragweed, chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds, or other plants in the same family. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding—there isn't enough information to know it's safe for either.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Elecampane may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional herbal remedies and you're not taking sedatives, sleep aids, or CNS depressants. Because this product interacts with a large number of medications in that category, check your exact prescriptions with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
