Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talacen pairs acetaminophen with pentazocine, an opioid pain reliever that already tends to make people feel drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded. The concern here is simple: elecampane is thought to have mild sedating properties of its own, so layering it on top of pentazocine could in theory deepen that sleepiness and slow your thinking or reaction time a bit more than the medicine alone.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical caution. It is based on how these things behave in the lab, not on solid human studies, so it may not amount to much for most people. Still, if you ever feel unusually groggy or unsteady, be careful driving, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
