Elecampane and Doxepin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Doxepin

Doxepin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Elecampane interacts with.

Theoretically, elecampane may cause additive sedative effects when taken with CNS depressants.
Elecampane might have sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: doxepin already makes you drowsy, that's actually why it's prescribed for sleep. Elecampane is an herb that may have mild sedative effects of its own. Put the two together and you could feel more sleepy than expected, with side effects like next-morning grogginess, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling foggy and unsteady when you get up.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is. This is a theoretical interaction, based on how the herb might behave rather than solid human studies. So it's not a red-alert situation, just something worth knowing. Before pairing them, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since extra drowsiness can affect driving and falls.
