CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Metoclopramide
Metoclopramide falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Elecampane interacts with.
Elecampane might have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing worth knowing about pairing elecampane with metoclopramide (Reglan). Metoclopramide already tends to make people feel drowsy or foggy, and it can sometimes cause restlessness or muscle twitching. Elecampane, an herb used mostly for coughs, is thought to have mild calming or sedative properties of its own. Put them together and you may feel a bit sleepier or more sluggish than usual.
I want to be honest with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how the herb is believed to act rather than solid human studies. Metoclopramide isn't a prodrug here, so this is about overlapping sedation, not a metabolism issue. Still, it's smart to mention elecampane to your pharmacist or doctor, especially before driving.

About Elecampane
What is Elecampane?
- Cough and bronchitis
- Asthma symptoms
- Loosening mucus (expectorant)
- Digestive upset
- Intestinal worms (traditional)
Elecampane is a traditional herb used mainly for coughs and other respiratory complaints, and as a bitter for digestion. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Metoclopramide
What Is Metoclopramide Used For?
Brand names: Reglan, Metoclopramide Injection, Octamide
Metoclopramide is used in adults for two main digestive problems. The first is symptomatic, documented gastroesophageal reflux that hasn't improved with conventional therapy (oral tablets, orally disintegrating tablets and oral solution). The second is acute and recurrent diabetic gastroparesis, where the stomach empties too slowly.
Gimoti nasal spray is approved only for diabetic gastroparesis in adults. Metoclopramide injection is used for diabetic gastroparesis, preventing vomiting from emetogenic (vomiting-causing) cancer chemotherapy, and preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting. It is also used to help place a tube into the small bowel and to speed barium movement for X-ray exams.
