Enzyme Caps contains 7 active ingredients, each a digestive enzyme or digestive aid. Papain (from papaya) breaks down protein; protease does similar work; amylase breaks down starch; lipase breaks down fat; and diastase further breaks down carbohydrates.
Betaine HCl is a form of stomach acid meant to support digestion, and ox bile extract aids fat digestion. The capsule itself and the cellulose, stearic acid, and silica inside are inactive ingredients (fillers and binders).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for papain is insufficient to establish whether it works for cancer, dental caries, radiation dermatitis, muscle soreness, shingles, or parasitic infections. Betaine HCl likewise has insufficient evidence for indigestion, low thyroid function, diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, or allergic rhinitis.
Lipase and protease were also checked against their proposed uses and showed insufficient evidence. We hold no established effectiveness ratings for amylase, diastase, or ox bile extract in the data we have.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Papain is generally tolerated as a food but supplements may irritate your digestive tract and cause allergic reactions in sensitive people—itchy watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, stomach cramps, sweating, or diarrhea. Concentrated papain and unripe papaya products should be avoided in pregnancy due to safety concerns, and there isn't enough data on papain supplements during breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it then.
Protease and lipase are generally well tolerated but may cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people. Betaine HCl may irritate the stomach and is not safe if you have ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux—it could make heartburn worse.
There isn't enough pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data for protease, lipase, or betaine HCl, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you are pregnant or nursing.

Theoretically, papain might increase the effects and side effects of warfarin.
In one case report, a patient previously stable on warfarin was found to have an international normalization ratio (INR) of 7.4, which was attributed to ingestion of a supplement containing papain from papaya extract.
