Essential Aminos Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Essential Aminos against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Essential Aminos by Pure Encapsulations
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Essential Aminos contains 9 amino acids — the building blocks your body uses to make and repair muscle, enzymes, hormones, and other proteins. The product includes L-tryptophan, L-histidine, L-isoleucine, L-leucine, L-lysine HCl, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, L-threonine, and L-valine.
These are also called essential amino acids because your body cannot make them — you have to get them from food or supplements. The capsules themselves contain vegetarian capsule material and ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C used as a preservative).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for these amino acids varies. L-tryptophan is rated possibly ineffective for depression; evidence for anxiety, athletic performance, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and teeth grinding is insufficient to rate.
L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores but has insufficient evidence for growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers. L-phenylalanine is possibly effective for vitiligo but possibly ineffective for ADHD; evidence for alcohol use disorder and multiple sclerosis is insufficient.
L-methionine is rated possibly effective for preventing neural tube birth defects in pregnancy but has insufficient evidence for hay fever, asthma, and colorectal cancer. L-histidine, L-isoleucine, L-leucine, L-threonine, and L-valine do not have effectiveness ratings on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated but carries an important caution: in the late 1980s, a contaminated batch from a single Japanese manufacturer caused a rare neurological disorder called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) in over 1,500 people in the U.S. Most modern L-tryptophan is now produced under strict controls and is considered safe, but this history warrants awareness.
Common side effects include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, headache, nausea, and stomach pain. L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses but may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion, especially at higher amounts; long-term safety at high doses is not well studied.
L-phenylalanine and L-methionine are generally tolerated in food amounts, though L-phenylalanine can cause anxiety, constipation, headache, insomnia, or nausea. L-methionine at high doses may cause dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, or vomiting.
L-histidine, L-threonine safety at supplement doses is not well established. Do not use this product if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition where your body cannot process phenylalanine safely.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
If you take levodopa (Parkinson's), check before you start — phenylalanine can reduce its effectiveness. Also double-check sedating drugs (benzodiazepines, opioids, sleep aids), antidepressants (especially SSRIs and SNRIs), MAOIs, baclofen, NMDA antagonists (like memantine), and 5-HT4 agonists before taking this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Essential Aminos is a straightforward amino acid blend, most suited to people who want to supplement their protein intake as part of fitness or general nutrition. If you take any antidepressant, sleep aid, Parkinson's medication, muscle relaxant, or older blood pressure medication, check with your pharmacist before starting — several interactions are serious.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should talk to their doctor first, as safety data is incomplete for most of these amino acids at supplement doses.

Essential Aminos by Pure Encapsulations Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Essential Aminos by Pure Encapsulations contains several amino acids that interact with medications.
The most serious concern is L-phenylalanine with levodopa (a Parkinson's medication): phenylalanine competes with levodopa for entry into the brain, which can worsen tremor, stiffness, and movement fluctuations in people taking levodopa.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-tryptophan carries Major risks with sedating medications (like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, and opioids) — it can add to their drowsy effects. It also has Moderate interactions with serotonin-boosting drugs (antidepressants like SSRIs, SNRIs, and others): combined use may raise the risk of serotonin syndrome and related problems.
L-phenylalanine also interacts Moderately with baclofen (a muscle relaxant) by reducing how much of it your body absorbs, and with older antidepressants called MAOIs, where it could theoretically trigger a dangerous spike in blood pressure. L-threonine has a Major interaction with NMDA antagonists (like memantine, used for Alzheimer's), potentially reducing their effectiveness.
L-lysine carries a Minor interaction with 5-HT4 agonists, drugs used for certain gastrointestinal conditions, by theoretically blunting their effects. L-histidine, L-methionine, L-isoleucine, L-leucine, and L-valine have no interactions documented in our data, though we could not check L-isoleucine, L-leucine, and L-valine.
Altogether, these interactions span 407 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Essential Aminos with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Tryptophan
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-tryptophan with CNS depressants might cause additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that L-tryptophan can cause fatigue and drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining L-tryptophan with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.
L-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
L-Threonine
Nmda Antagonists
Theoretically, threonine might decrease the effects of NMDA antagonists.
Threonine increases central nervous system (CNS) glycine levels. Glycine seems to bind a site on NMDA receptors and enhance the activity of the receptors.
L-Lysine HCl
5-Ht4 Agonists
Theoretically, lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists.
Animal research suggests that L-lysine is a partial serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) antagonist and inhibits diarrhea induced by the 5-HT4 agonist, 5-hydroxytryptophane.
