What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Essential Woman against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Essential Woman by Barlean's
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Essential Woman is a blend of 8 active ingredients centered on healthy fats and plant compounds. It contains polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (including omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 varieties), plus oleic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid—fatty acids that support heart and overall health.
It also supplies isoflavones, plant compounds with estrogenic properties, and saponins. The softgels are rounded out with flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, flaxseed particles, and soy isoflavones as inactive ingredients, along with rosemary extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), gelatin, glycerin, water, and caramel color.
Does it work?
Not established
For oleic acid, evidence suggests it is possibly effective for lowering cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and supporting heart health (coronary heart disease). For isoflavones (from kudzu), the data show they are possibly effective for alcohol use disorder, but evidence is insufficient to rate them for hay fever, angina, or back pain.
The remaining ingredients in this product do not have established effectiveness ratings in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe in normal food amounts—olive oil and similar sources pose no concern. However, concentrated oleic acid supplements are not well studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the data advise caution at supplement doses.
Isoflavones (from kudzu) are generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but long-term safety isn't established. The safety data advise against isoflavones in pregnancy because of possible hormone-like effects and insufficient information, and there is too little safety data to recommend isoflavones while breastfeeding.
In clinical trials, kudzu-derived isoflavones caused nausea, indigestion, bloating, dizziness, and skin rashes in a small number of participants, though these occurred no more often than placebo. One case report described an allergic reaction with a rash after taking a combination herb product containing kudzu.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Essential Woman if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (moderate risk of increased bleeding), diabetes medications (moderate risk of low blood sugar), tamoxifen, estrogen therapy, methotrexate, caffeine supplements, or any drugs known to stress the liver. The isoflavones in this product are responsible for these concerns.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Essential Woman is a supplement aimed at supporting heart health and general wellness in women through its blend of beneficial fatty acids and plant isoflavones. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, tamoxifen, estrogen therapy, methotrexate, caffeine regularly, or any liver-toxic drugs, check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, since the isoflavones interact with these.
Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy should talk with their healthcare provider first.

Essential Woman by Barlean's Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Barlean's Essential Woman contains oleic acid and isoflavones (from kudzu) that interact with medications.
The most serious concern involves isoflavones and blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs): the isoflavones appear to have antiplatelet activity and may increase bleeding risk if you're on these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Isoflavones also interact with several other drug types. They may theoretically increase the effects of diabetes medications and raise your low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) risk—your diabetes medication dose might need adjusting.
Isoflavones can interfere with how your liver processes caffeine, potentially raising caffeine levels. They may also reduce how well your body clears methotrexate (a cancer and autoimmune drug), increasing toxicity risk, and could interfere with tamoxifen (a breast cancer medication) or alter estrogen therapy effects.
Additionally, there's concern that isoflavones might stress the liver if you're taking other liver-toxic drugs.
Oleic acid may theoretically increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs and lower your blood sugar more than expected. Several ingredients—polyunsaturated fat, gamma-linolenic acid, monounsaturated fat, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and saponins—could not be checked against our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 585 individual medications.
Use the medication checker below to search for your exact drugs before starting this product, and discuss any concerns with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Essential Woman with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Isoflavones
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, kudzu may increase the risk of bleeding if used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Kudzu isoflavones are reported to have antiplatelet activity.
Caffeine
Theoretically, taking kudzu with caffeine might increase levels of caffeine.
In healthy males injected with the kudzu constituent puerarin, caffeine clearance and metabolism is inhibited. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if taking kudzu orally would have this same effect.
Estrogens
Theoretically, kudzu might alter the effects of estrogen therapy.
Some research suggests that kudzu has estrogenic effects. This may enhance or inhibit the effects of estrogen therapy.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use might have additive hepatotoxic effects.
There is some concern that kudzu can adversely affect the liver.
Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)
Theoretically, taking kudzu with methotrexate might increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity.
Preclinical research suggests that kudzu extract greatly reduces the elimination and increases the toxicity of methotrexate. Kudzu might inhibit organic anion transporters (OATs) that are responsible for hepatobiliary and renal excretion of anions, similar to the interaction between methotrexate and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, kudzu might interfere with tamoxifen activity.
Some research suggests that kudzu may have estrogenic effects.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking kudzu with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Kudzu might lower blood glucose levels and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. The dose of diabetes medications might need to be adjusted.
Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fat
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
