HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Extra Strength Burdock Root 450 mg 4:1 Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a 4:1 concentrated burdock root extract at 450 mg per capsule. The extract is standardized to be four times the strength of the raw root material.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't support claims that burdock works for acne, aging skin, breast cancer, common cold, or atopic dermatitis (eczema). For all of these uses, the data available shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it's effective.
If you're considering burdock for one of these purposes, the science hasn't established it yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Burdock is generally well tolerated when eaten as food and appears safe for short-term use in healthy adults, though human safety data are limited. It's rarely caused adverse effects historically.
Safety data advise against medicinal use during pregnancy due to lack of safety information and possible effects on the uterus. The same caution applies to breastfeeding — there isn't enough data to know it's safe, so medicinal use should be avoided.
Allergic reactions (including severe ones like anaphylaxis) are rare but possible. Contact dermatitis can occur, particularly with prolonged use of the root oil or burdock plasters.
A single case of liver injury was reported after taking an herbal detox tea containing burdock and other ingredients, but it's unclear whether burdock was responsible.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners like warfarin, or drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel), check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — a Moderate interaction is documented. No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Burdock has been used traditionally for a long time and is generally well tolerated, but the evidence doesn't establish that it works for the conditions people most often use it for. The main caution is with blood thinners and antiplatelet medications — if you take any of those, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Avoid medicinal use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
