How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactase is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. Lipase has little safety data in pregnancy, so use only if your doctor advises it, and safety while breastfeeding hasn't been well studied — check with your healthcare provider first.
In adults, Lactase is generally well tolerated; a rare case of allergic reaction (contact dermatitis and allergic rhinitis) has been reported in someone exposed to powdered lactase. Lipase is generally well tolerated in supplement form, though no serious adverse effects in adults have been formally documented.
In premature infants, a specific recombinant lipase added to formula or breast milk has caused gastrointestinal problems including abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, and in rare cases necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious bowel condition); this product is not intended for premature infants unless under medical guidance.
