What’s inside
Low disclosure
FemEcology contains five active probiotic ingredients: four Lactobacillus species (rhamnosus, salivarius, plantarum, and acidophilus), plus Lactobacillus reuteri. These are live beneficial bacteria intended to support vaginal and digestive health.
The product also contains several inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, water, L-leucine, and silica — which are fillers and capsule materials that help deliver the probiotics.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data we hold shows that Lactobacillus acidophilus — one of the five actives in this formula — is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For atopic disease (allergic conditions), it appears possibly ineffective.
Evidence for acute respiratory distress syndrome isn't established. We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for the other four Lactobacillus strains in FemEcology, so we can't speak to what they may do.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects — epigastric discomfort, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or burping — but these are uncommon.
Because the product contains live organisms, there's a theoretical concern that in rare cases (especially in people with compromised immune systems) the bacteria could spread to other parts of the body and cause serious infection, though most documented cases involved translocation of bacteria already present elsewhere. In pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly safe, but data are limited; for breastfeeding, we have no rating on file.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
