Fennel Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Fennel against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: fennel powder. That's it — just the pure plant material, no added fillers or binders listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for fennel is mixed. It's rated Possibly Effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea).
For everything else on file — bronchitis, anxiety, bedwetting, and cholera — there isn't enough reliable evidence to know whether it works. If period pain relief is what you're after, fennel may help, but for other uses, the data is too thin to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Fennel is generally well tolerated when you eat it as a food — most people don't run into trouble. At medicinal doses or as a concentrated supplement like this powder, you should be more cautious.
The most common side effects are stomach discomfort, sun sensitivity, and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Rarely, seizures have been reported.
Some people — especially those with certain allergies — can have more serious reactions like wheezing or difficulty breathing when exposed to fennel. During pregnancy, avoid medicinal or concentrated amounts because safety data is limited and fennel has hormone-like effects.
While breastfeeding, food amounts are probably fine, but medicinal doses aren't well studied — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking fennel, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (like warfarin or aspirin), birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, tamoxifen, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), or any medication processed by your liver — fennel has Moderate interactions with all of these drug types.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have period pain and want to try something herbal, fennel has some evidence behind it. But if you take blood thinners, birth control, hormone replacement, tamoxifen, ciprofloxacin, or any medication your liver processes heavily, you need to check with your pharmacist first.
Pregnant women should avoid medicinal amounts.

Fennel by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Fennel by BulkSupplements.com interacts with a notable range of medications, and the most serious concern is its potential effect on blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs).
Animal research suggests fennel oil has blood-thinning properties, which could increase your bleeding risk when combined with medications like warfarin or aspirin — a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Fennel also has Moderate interactions with several hormone-related medications. It contains compounds with estrogen-like activity, which could theoretically reduce how well birth control works, interfere with hormone replacement therapy, or weaken the cancer-fighting effects of tamoxifen.
Additionally, fennel may raise levels of drugs your liver processes through the CYP3A4 pathway (a large group of common medications), and it could reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cipro) by nearly half, possibly by binding minerals in your digestive tract.
Altogether, these interactions span 730 individual medications. Before you start fennel, check your exact prescriptions and supplements with the medication search tool on this page.

Fennel
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, fennel might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Theoretically, fennel might decrease the levels and clinical effects of ciprofloxacin.
Animal research shows that fennel reduces ciprofloxacin bioavailability by nearly 50%, possibly due to the metal cations such as calcium, iron, and magnesium contained in fennel. This study also found that fennel increased tissue distribution and slowed elimination of ciprofloxacin.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the effects of contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the antiestrogenic effect of tamoxifen.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity, which may interfere with the antiestrogenic activity of tamoxifen.
