The evidence for fig extract isn't established in our data for the conditions it's marketed toward. Safety studies show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for constipation, eczema (atopic dermatitis), diabetes, melasma, or vitiligo.
While a small clinical study did show that fig leaf tea modestly reduced blood sugar and insulin requirements in type 1 diabetes patients, that's not the same as saying this product is proven effective for diabetes or blood sugar control.

Fig fruit as food is well tolerated by most people. However, this product is a concentrated leaf extract, which is less studied than the whole fruit.
The safety data on medicinal fig leaf extracts is limited. Serious side effects are rare but possible: allergy and, in very rare cases, anaphylaxis with oral use.
Topically or with sun exposure, fig leaf may cause photodermatitis—a severe skin reaction—and many documented cases exist, some serious enough to require hospitalization. If you use this product, avoid excessive sunlight and ultraviolet light exposure.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, fig might increase the risk of photosensitivity when used in combination with photosensitizing drugs.
Many cases of photodermatitis from fig leaf have been reported. Some drugs that also cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.
