What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live beneficial bacterium (probiotic) that naturally lives in your digestive tract. The capsule also holds rice dextrin and gelatin as inactive ingredients — these are just the filler and capsule material that help deliver the probiotic to you.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: probiotic benefits and natural bacterial balance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Constipation, Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Lactose intolerance, Rotaviral diarrhea.

The evidence shows L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For atopic disease (like eczema or allergies), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective.

There isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. In rare cases, people have reported mild gastrointestinal side effects — like stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea — when taking it with other probiotics; these are uncommon.

Very rarely, in people with certain health conditions, the live bacteria have been linked to serious infections like bacteremia or endocarditis, but this appears to happen mostly when bacteria move from other parts of the body. Because the safety data are limited, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product, especially if you have a weakened immune system or serious underlying illness.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Florajen Acidophilus by Florajen: Common Questions

Does Florajen Acidophilus by Florajen interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Florajen Acidophilus has a known interaction with 182 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Florajen Acidophilus contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this work if I'm on antibiotics?
Not as well if you take them together. Antibiotics kill the live bacteria in this probiotic, so you'll get fewer active organisms. The solution is to separate them — take your antibiotic at one time of day and this supplement several hours apart. Your pharmacist can help you work out a schedule.
Is Lactobacillus acidophilus the same as the yogurt cultures?
It's the same type of bacteria, but this is a concentrated, live supplement rather than food. The product contains active organisms that you ingest orally, so the dose is much higher than what you'd get from yogurt.
Can I take this if I have a weak immune system?
The data are limited, and there is a rare concern that live bacteria could cause serious infection in people with weakened immunity. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you have a compromised immune system or a serious underlying illness.
What side effects should I expect?
Most people tolerate it well. Rarely, some people report mild stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, or diarrhea, especially when combined with other probiotics — but these are uncommon. Rash has been reported in a clinical trial, though it's unclear whether the probiotic or another factor caused it.
Is it safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
We don't have safety data on file for L. acidophilus in pregnancy or lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to decide whether it's right for you in either situation.
