HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Formula 8 Lactase + Probiotic by NESS Nutritional Enzyme Support System
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Formula 8 contains three active ingredients. Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar), and it's the main player if you have trouble digesting dairy.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a live probiotic bacteria meant to support gut health. Amylase is a third enzyme ingredient.
The product also contains plant fiber and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance — that's well established. The evidence for it helping with colic or prematurity isn't strong enough to rate.
Lactobacillus acidophilus has possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), certain bacterial infections including Helicobacter pylori and bacterial vaginosis, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. We don't have enough data on file to rate how well it works for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or whether it helps with atopic disease.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed, though a rare case of allergic reaction (contact dermatitis and allergy symptoms) has been reported in someone exposed to powdered lactase. If you're allergic to lactase itself, avoid this product.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is well tolerated in healthy adults and children, but live probiotics carry a very small theoretical risk — in rare cases, the bacteria have been isolated in serious infections like sepsis or endocarditis, usually in people whose immune systems are already compromised. Oral use may occasionally cause mild GI side effects like bloating, gas, or stomach discomfort, but these are uncommon.
There isn't enough pregnancy or breastfeeding data on file for L. acidophilus; talk with your doctor for personalized advice. Lactase is likely safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotics, separate them from this product by a few hours — the antibiotic can kill off the live probiotic organisms and make them less effective. Check your exact medications below before you begin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a straightforward enzyme and probiotic blend for lactose digestion and gut support. If you take antibiotics, time them separately from this product to protect the probiotic.
Anyone with a compromised immune system or severe intestinal damage should check with their doctor first. Run your medications through the checker before you start.
