Full Spectrum Carotene contains 5 active ingredients: zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, lutein, vitamin A, and a mixed carotenoid complex. These are carotenoids—plant pigments that your body uses for eye health and converts to vitamin A.
The softgel also contains inactive ingredients (olive oil, gelatin, glycerin, water, vitamin E, lecithin, annatto, beeswax, and titanium dioxide) that help deliver and preserve the active compounds.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common vision problem in older adults. Lutein is possibly effective for both AMD and cataracts.
Vitamin A is effective for vitamin A deficiency and possibly effective for oral leukoplakia, aging skin, measles, and ulcerative colitis. For zeaxanthin with age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, breast cancer, and other conditions, the evidence isn't yet established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
At typical supplement doses, zeaxanthin and lutein are generally well tolerated. Vitamin A is generally safe at recommended amounts, but high doses build up in your body and can be toxic—causing headache, skin problems, liver damage, and in severe cases, serious neurological effects.
For pregnancy: zeaxanthin and lutein are rated likely safe, though concentrated supplements haven't been well studied—food sources are fine. Vitamin A at high doses (especially as retinol) can cause birth defects and should be avoided in pregnancy.
For breastfeeding: zeaxanthin, lutein, and vitamin A at normal amounts are likely safe; lutein is naturally present in breast milk, but safety of higher supplement doses isn't well studied.

The most serious concern is a Major interaction with retinoids (prescription vitamin A derivatives)—taking this product alongside retinoids can cause dangerously high vitamin A levels and additive toxicity.

Vitamin A and beta-carotene also interact with blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin)—high doses may increase bleeding risk. They also interact with tetracycline antibiotics (used for acne and some infections) and can theoretically raise the risk of a serious but rare condition called benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).
High doses with other liver-damaging drugs could theoretically increase liver injury risk.
Zeaxanthin interacts with antidiabetes drugs—theoretically raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). We could not check alpha-carotene against known medication interactions.

Vitamin A
Retinoids
Concomitant use of retinoids with vitamin A supplements might produce supratherapeutic vitamin A levels.
Retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, could have additive toxic effects when taken with vitamin A supplements.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking high doses of vitamin A in combination with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver disease.
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest level of intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. Doses of vitamin A above the UL can cause hepatotoxicity, ranging from elevated liver enzymes to liver failure.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, taking tetracycline antibiotics with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of pseudotumor cerebri.
Benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) can occur with tetracyclines and with acute or chronic vitamin A toxicity. Case reports suggest that taking tetracyclines and vitamin A concurrently can increase the risk of this condition. Avoid high doses of vitamin A in people taking tetracyclines chronically.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, high doses of vitamin A could increase the risk of bleeding with warfarin.
Vitamin A toxicity is associated with hemorrhage and hypoprothrombinemia, possibly due to vitamin K antagonism. Advise patients taking warfarin to avoid doses of vitamin A above the tolerable upper intake level of 10,000 IU/day for adults.
Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
