Functional 5 Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Mushroom Wellness by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Functional 5 against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Functional 5 by Mushroom Wellness by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Functional 5 contains 5 active ingredients: beta-glucan, poria mushroom, reishi, suehirotake, and turkey tail — all mushroom-derived compounds. Beta-glucan is a soluble fiber from fungi that may support heart and cholesterol health.
Poria is a traditional medicinal mushroom. Reishi, suehirotake, and turkey tail are also mushroom extracts traditionally used in herbal medicine.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients: myceliated brown rice (a growth medium) and pullulan (a capsule material).
Does it work?
Not established
Beta-glucan in this product is Likely Effective for high cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and coronary heart disease. For the other ingredients, the evidence isn't established in our data: poria, reishi, suehirotake, and turkey tail are listed with insufficient reliable evidence for the conditions studied (cancer, chronic fatigue, dementia, diabetes, and others).
That doesn't mean they don't work — it means we don't yet have enough rigorous research to say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-glucan from food is generally well tolerated, but concentrated supplement doses lack safety data, so use caution. Poria is generally well tolerated in traditional use, but human safety data are limited.
Allergic reactions to poria are rare but have been reported, including allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. For pregnancy: beta-glucan and poria both lack enough safety data.
The evidence advises against poria in pregnancy and during breastfeeding; for beta-glucan, there's little research on supplement doses in either situation — talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start Functional 5, check whether you take blood pressure medications (beta-glucan may lower your pressure further), immune-suppressing drugs (beta-glucan may interfere), sedatives or sleep aids (poria may enhance their effects), anticholinergic drugs like those for overactive bladder or Parkinson's (poria may reduce their effectiveness), or cholinergic drugs like those for myasthenia gravis (poria may add to their effects). We couldn't check reishi, suehirotake, or turkey tail — run your full med list through the checker below to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Functional 5 is mainly aimed at people interested in immune and heart support, backed by moderate evidence for beta-glucan's effect on cholesterol and heart disease. If you take blood pressure medication, immune suppressors, sedatives, or drugs for bladder and nerve conditions, check your exact medications on this page before starting it.
Talk with your pharmacist, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or on any prescription drugs.

Functional 5 by Mushroom Wellness by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Functional 5 by Mushroom Wellness by Herb Pharm contains ingredients that interact with medications.
The most serious concern is beta-glucan, which can lower blood pressure (hypotension) — a Moderate-severity interaction with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs). If you take a blood pressure med, this product might push your pressure lower than intended.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beta-glucan also has a Moderate interaction with immune-suppressing drugs (immunosuppressants). Because beta-glucan may activate your immune system, it could work against those medications.
Poria mushroom extract carries three Moderate-severity interactions: it may enhance the effects of sedatives (CNS depressants), reduce the effectiveness of anticholinergic drugs (used for conditions like overactive bladder and Parkinson's), and add to the effects of cholinergic drugs (used in conditions like myasthenia gravis and Alzheimer's). These poria interactions haven't been confirmed in humans, but they're theoretically possible based on animal research.
We couldn't check three other ingredients — reishi, suehirotake, and turkey tail — because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 699 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up any drugs you take.

For each ingredient in Functional 5 with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Poria
Anticholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, poria mushroom might decrease the clinical effects of anticholinergic drugs.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Cholinergic Drugs
Theoretically, poria mushroom might have additive effects when used with cholinergic drugs.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking poria mushroom extract may enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of sedatives.
Animal research shows that poria mushroom extract has sedative properties. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Reishi
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, reishi mushroom might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that reishi mushroom decreases blood sugar. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking reishi mushroom does not reduce fasting glucose levels, and its effects on glycated hemoglobin are inconsistent.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.

Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, black hoof mushroom might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro, polysaccharides from black hoof mushroom grown in culture inhibit CYP1A2. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, black hoof mushroom might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2E1 substrates.
In vitro, polysaccharides from black hoof mushroom grown in culture inhibit CYP2E1. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, black hoof mushroom might reduce the effects of immunosuppressant medications.
In animal research, polysaccharides from black hoof mushroom and black hoof mushroom extract stimulate immune responses.
