Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: this combo pill contains codeine, an opioid that can make you drowsy and slow your breathing, especially at higher doses. Poria mushroom has shown mild sedative effects in animal studies, so on paper, pairing it with codeine could add to that sleepy, relaxed feeling. You might notice more grogginess, dizziness, or trouble concentrating.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, and it has not been seen in people. So I'm not ringing alarm bells. Just be a little cautious until you feel how the two affect you together, avoid driving if you feel foggy, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Poria Mushroom

What is Poria Mushroom?

  • Fluid retention and swelling
  • Digestive complaints
  • Sleep and calming support
  • General wellness and immune support
  • Urinary support

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
