These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Poria Mushroom interacts with whole categories of medication. Phenobarbital falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Poria Mushroom in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Phenobarbital
Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.
Animal research shows that poria mushroom extract has sedative properties. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: phenobarbital already works by quieting down activity in your brain, so it can make you drowsy, foggy, slow to react, or unsteady on your feet. Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) has shown mild sedative, calming effects in animal studies, so the concern is that pairing the two could add up and leave you more sedated than expected.
I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This interaction is theoretical, based on lab and animal work, and has not actually been shown in people. So it's not a reason to panic. Still, phenobarbital is a strong medication, and adding extra calming effects isn't something to guess at. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and watch for unusual drowsiness if you do.

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Phenobarbital also falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for phenobarbital and poria mushroom: this is a theory only, and it comes from animal lab work, not real-world human studies. The idea is that poria may nudge up the activity of a brain chemical called acetylcholine. That's the opposite of how anticholinergic medicines work, so in theory poria could slightly blunt that type of effect.
Honestly, phenobarbital is mainly a brain-calming barbiturate used for seizures and sedation, so this particular acetylcholine angle isn't a strong fit for how it works. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since phenobarbital is a serious seizure medicine, please run any poria use past your pharmacist or doctor first rather than adding it on your own.

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid.
