Here's the basic idea with chlorpheniramine and poria mushroom. Chlorpheniramine works partly by blocking a brain and body chemical called acetylcholine, which is why it can dry you out and make you sleepy. In animal studies, poria mushroom appears to nudge acetylcholine levels up a little. So in theory, poria could slightly push back against chlorpheniramine and make it work a touch less well, meaning your sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes might not calm down as much.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theory from lab and animal research, and it has not been seen in real people. For most folks taking an occasional allergy or cold dose, it's unlikely to cause any noticeable problem. If you use poria regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Chlorpheniramine is used to temporarily relieve common allergy symptoms caused by hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other upper respiratory allergies. These include runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

These uses are supported across multiple products — including tablets (such as Aller-chlor, Allergy, Allergy Relief, Allergy Time, Anti Allergy, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate), extended-release tablets (Allergy Relief and Chlorphen-12), the oral solution Ed Chlorped Jr, and the inhalers ClorRelief and ClorRelief KIDs.
