Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a compound your brain naturally produces to help calm nerve activity. Each capsule delivers 750 mg.
The other ingredients are fillers and capsule materials — hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and silica — that have no active role.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for GABA supplements isn't established in the data we hold. It's been studied for anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, chronic bronchitis, and cerebral palsy, but the research so far isn't reliable enough to say whether it works for any of those uses.
If you're thinking about it for a specific condition, talk it over with your doctor to see if there's stronger evidence for what you're aiming for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
GABA is generally well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied — that's something to keep in mind if you're thinking about taking it regularly. The most common side effects reported with oral GABA are drowsiness, stomach upset, mild throat burning, muscle weakness, and nausea.
One study noted a case of temporary loss of menstruation when GABA was used alongside another supplement. There isn't enough safety information on file for pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant, trying to conceive, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications — GABA might lower your blood pressure further. Also double-check any sedating drugs, like sleep aids or pain relievers, since GABA could add to drowsiness, though it's unclear how big a concern that is in real life.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GABA might be worth considering if you're looking for a calming supplement and have no blood pressure medications or sedating drugs on board. Because the long-term safety picture is unclear and evidence for its effectiveness is limited, it's worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist before you start — especially if you take any prescription medications or have health conditions that need careful management.

For each ingredient in GABA 750 mg Maximum Strength with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
