Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient supplement: GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a naturally occurring compound in your brain. GABA is one of your body's main calming neurotransmitters — it's involved in relaxation and sleep.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for GABA supplements isn't established in the data we hold. The facts show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, cerebral palsy, and chronic bronchitis.
That means the research either isn't there yet or isn't strong enough to draw firm conclusions — not that it doesn't work, just that we can't say either way from the studies available.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth, GABA is generally well tolerated short-term, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects reported are drowsiness, nausea, gastric upset, minor throat burning, and muscle weakness.
One patient reported a temporary stop in menstruation when taking GABA with another supplement. The safety data available is limited, so unless your doctor advises otherwise, this product is best avoided.
It's also not recommended while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety information.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications — GABA may lower your blood pressure too much. Also flag any sedating drugs (sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, pain relievers, or others that make you drowsy), since GABA might strengthen their sedative effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GABA Powder is a single-ingredient supplement with limited evidence for the conditions it's marketed for and a short safety track record. If you take blood pressure medication or any sedating drug, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this.
Talk it over with your own healthcare provider about whether it makes sense for you and how to use it safely alongside your other medications.

GABA
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
