GI Flora Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking GI Flora against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
GI Flora contains 4 active probiotic ingredients: three Lactobacillus strains (casei, rhamnosus, and acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium longum. These are live, beneficial bacteria meant to support your gut flora.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients—hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (the capsule material itself), FOS (a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria), silicon dioxide, and magnesium silicate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis—but the data are preliminary.
For Bifidobacterium longum, the evidence on the label conditions (cognitive decline, hay fever, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance) is insufficient to rate; we don't have reliable data showing it works for those uses. Neither ingredient has strong, established effectiveness in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea can occur, but they're uncommon.
Very rarely, these live bacteria have been found in bloodstream infections or serious infections in susceptible patients, though this typically occurs in those already ill or with compromised immunity. Bifidobacterium longum is also generally well tolerated in healthy people but warrants caution in those who are seriously ill or immune-compromised; rare gastrointestinal symptoms and one case of dry cough have been reported.
Because this product contains live organisms and safety data are limited, especially during breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—especially if you're critically ill, immune-compromised, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, do not take this product at the same time. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in these probiotics, making them less effective; your doctor or pharmacist can help you space out the doses properly.
Additionally, because we could not check two of the four probiotic strains in this product, use the search tool below to run your full medication list through.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GI Flora is a four-strain probiotic mix that may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and a couple of other digestive concerns, though evidence is preliminary. The main thing to watch is timing with antibiotics—they can kill the live bacteria, so space out the doses and ask your doctor or pharmacist when to take each.
If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or breastfeeding, talk it over with your healthcare provider before starting.

GI Flora by Allergy Research Group Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GI Flora by Allergy Research Group contains four probiotic strains, two of which we can check for interactions.
Through its Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum content, this product has a moderate interaction with antibiotic drugs—the live organisms in these probiotics may be killed by antibiotics, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the probiotic itself.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The concern is specific to timing: if you take antibiotics and this product at the same time, the antibiotics may kill off too many of the live bacteria before they can establish themselves. The data advises separating the two by spacing out doses, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about the right timing for your situation.
We were unable to check Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus rhamnosus—we hold no interaction data for these ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Use the search tool below to enter your exact medications and see whether any fall into the antibiotic category or have other documented interactions with the checked ingredients.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
