Ginseng Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Ginseng against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid contains one active ingredient: American ginseng. The product also includes vegetable glycerine, distilled water, and organic grain alcohol as inactive ingredients that help deliver the ginseng in liquid form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
American ginseng is possibly effective for upper respiratory tract infections (colds and similar viral infections). For anemia of chronic disease and breast cancer, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold — there isn't enough reliable research to rate whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
American ginseng is generally well tolerated in the short term for healthy adults, but ginseng products vary widely in quality and dose, and we don't have much data on long-term safety. Headache has been reported with use.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because of some laboratory research concerns. There isn't enough information about safety while breastfeeding, so it's safer to avoid it then.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on warfarin or any blood thinner, diabetes medications, immunosuppressants (drugs after organ transplant), or MAOI antidepressants. These are the medication types with documented interactions that you'll want to discuss.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Mountain Meadow Herbs Ginseng may help with colds, and healthy adults generally tolerate it well short-term. But if you take warfarin, diabetes medications, immunosuppressants, or any MAOI antidepressants, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interactions could affect how your medications work.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Ginseng by Mountain Meadow Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mountain Meadow Herbs Ginseng, a liquid containing American ginseng, interacts with several important medication types.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — American ginseng appears to reduce warfarin's effectiveness, which could lower your clotting protection and increase clot risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
American ginseng also carries Moderate-severity interactions with three other drug categories. It may interfere with immunosuppressants (medications that reduce immune activity after transplant or for autoimmune conditions) by stimulating your immune system.
It can theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes medications. And there are case reports of insomnia, headache, tremors, and mood changes when unspecified ginseng products were used with MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors, an older class of antidepressants).
Altogether, these interactions span 217 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to look up any blood thinners, diabetes drugs, immunosuppressants, or MAOIs you're taking before you start this product.
