Gluta-1000 contains three active ingredients. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant compound that your body makes naturally; it helps convert food into energy and may protect cells from damage.
Rose hips are the fruit of wild rose plants and are rich in vitamin C and other compounds. Reduced L-glutathione is a protein-like molecule made from three amino acids; your cells produce it to defend themselves against damage and support detoxification.
The product also includes four inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide — which are typical capsule fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
Evidence for alpha-lipoic acid is rated Possibly Effective for diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy), high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and obesity. For rose hips, the data shows Possibly Effective for pain after surgery (postoperative pain) and osteoarthritis, but the evidence for high cholesterol is Insufficient.
Reduced L-glutathione is rated Possibly Effective for nerve damage caused by the chemotherapy drug cisplatin, but evidence is Insufficient for Alzheimer's disease, fatty liver disease, athletic performance, and cataracts. Overall, the strongest case is for alpha-lipoic acid in nerve damage and cholesterol — though the clinical benefit is modest — and rose hips for joint pain.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Alpha-lipoic acid is generally well tolerated in most adults but can lower blood sugar and should be used under medical guidance. Common side effects from oral use include headache, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting; skin rash and itching have also been reported.
There is not enough reliable safety information to use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Rose hips are generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement safety is less studied; common side effects include flatulence and loose stools, and rare ones include vertigo and headache.
Avoid concentrated rose hip supplements unless your doctor approves. Reduced L-glutathione appears generally well tolerated short-term by mouth, but long-term safety is unclear; there is not enough data to recommend it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you have asthma and encounter inhaled glutathione, be aware it can cause airway narrowing and cough.
