Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality evidence is limited and liver concerns have been flagged. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.

Serious liver damage is rare but has been reported in at least four cases — though contaminants in those products weren't ruled out, and doses weren't documented. In one controlled trial, 120 mg daily for 6 months didn't harm liver function.
