Gotu kola is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.

Topically (on skin), it can occasionally trigger eczema or allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive people. There's concern about liver toxicity in rare cases—four cases have been reported, though contamination and exact dosing in those cases weren't clearly documented.

One clinical trial found no liver-function changes at 120 mg daily for 6 months, but the safety data overall is not extensive. There isn't enough safety information for pregnancy, and it's traditionally been avoided during pregnancy.
