Gotu Kola Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gotu Kola against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola by Eclectic Herb
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried Gotu Kola, a plant traditionally used for circulation and skin health. The liquid form also includes alcohol and filtered water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Leans against
Gotu kola shows possibly effective evidence for venous insufficiency (sluggish blood flow in the veins) and for supporting burn healing. For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate.
There's also possibly ineffective evidence for radiation dermatitis, and for anxiety disorder the data is too sparse to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality safety data is limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.
Rare but serious concern: there are a few case reports of liver toxicity, though contamination in those products and dose details weren't fully documented. One clinical trial monitoring liver function found no changes at 120 mg daily for 6 months, but caution is warranted.
Because of not enough safety data, it's traditionally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding — talk with your doctor before using it if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check this product against any sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or seizure medications (Moderate interaction). Also double-check any medication your doctor said can affect the liver (Moderate interaction).
Use the tool below to search your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu kola may help with sluggish leg veins or wound healing, but check with your pharmacist first if you take sedatives, sleep aids, or any medication that affects your liver. If you're pregnant, nursing, or have liver concerns, discuss this with your doctor before starting.

Gotu Kola by Eclectic Herb Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola by Eclectic Herb can interact with some medications.
The main concern is with CNS depressants — drugs that calm your nervous system, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some anxiety medications. Taking gotu kola alongside these may boost their sedative effect more than you'd expect, since the herb itself may have calming properties.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The other significant interaction is with hepatotoxic drugs — medications known to stress or damage the liver. Combined use could theoretically add to that liver strain.
There are a few case reports of liver problems linked to gotu kola use, though it's not clear whether the herb was definitely the cause in those cases.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact prescriptions — especially anything for sleep, anxiety, or seizures, and any medication your doctor's warned you affects the liver — through the checker below.
