Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Gotu Kola Aerial Parts Extract, a liquid concentration of the above-ground portions of the gotu kola plant. The liquid form includes cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the veins) and for healing burns.
However, it's rated possibly ineffective for radiation dermatitis, and the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate it for cognitive function or Alzheimer's disease. For generalized anxiety disorder, we don't have reliable evidence to say whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated when used short-term, though quality safety data is limited. The most common side effects are stomach irritation and nausea when taken by mouth.
Topically, it can cause eczema or allergic contact dermatitis in some people. There is concern about rare liver toxicity—a handful of cases have been reported, though it's unclear whether gotu kola itself or a contaminant in the product was responsible.
In one clinical trial where liver function was monitored, 120 mg daily for 6 months did not cause liver damage. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Not enough information is available about either situation to know whether it's safe.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your pharmacist if you take CNS depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or anything else that makes you drowsy. Also check if you're on any medication known to stress the liver.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola by Herb Pharm may help with venous insufficiency or burns, but if you take sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or any drug that affects your liver, talk to your pharmacist before adding this product. It's not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Gotu Kola by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Gotu Kola is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with some medications.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants—drugs that slow down your brain and nervous system, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some anxiety medications. Taking gotu kola with these may increase drowsiness and sedation beyond what either substance would cause alone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gotu kola may also pose a moderate risk with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can stress your liver). In theory, combining them could add up to more liver strain.
While there are a few older case reports of liver problems tied to gotu kola use, it's not clear whether gotu kola was the culprit or whether contaminants in the product were responsible—and the doses involved weren't documented.
Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Before you start this product, especially if you take sedatives, anxiety meds, sleep aids, or any drug known to affect the liver, run your exact medications through the checker below.

Gotu Kola Aerial Parts Extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking gotu kola might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
In vitro research suggests that gotu kola may have sedative effects via binding of GABA receptors.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking gotu kola with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects.
There are at least four case reports of hepatotoxicity associated with the use of gotu kola. However, more information is needed to determine if gotu kola was the causative factor in these cases.
